What Music Means to Me

To answer these questions, I would like to share a story.

One day, my parents took me out to downtown Toronto. They were taking me to an Imagine Dragons concert. At the time, I had no idea we were going to the concert, nor that there was one at all.

I love music because of the sounds of the instruments, especially the banging of the drums. I like the drums because they remind me of my dad, and he plays drums too! He played in a blues band called Midnight Mojo and performed once with Jeff Healey.

Ever since I was eight, Imagine Dragons has been my favourite band. Their music is very motivational. My two favourite songs that they wrote are Natural and Believer. I love lots of music, including The Beatles and Eminem.

My parents told me that we were going on a walk to the lake; however, they were taking me to the concert. We walked and walked until we got to the Budweiser Stage, where they were playing. When we got there, my parents were recording so they could get my reaction, and in the video, you could hear me saying, “How do we get to the lake”?

Once I saw the Imagine Dragons tent. That is when I started wondering why it was there. Then I walked up to the person in the tent and asked, “ What is going on here”? Then the lady at the tent said, “Imagine Dragons are playing here.” Then I looked my dad dead in the eye, and said. “ Well, it’s too late to get tickets now”. That is when my parents revealed to me that we were going to the concert and sitting in the 17th row.

Once we got past the security checks, we got settled into our seats and started listening to Imagine Dragons.  A little after the start of the concert, they played the song Believer. And I sang my heart out, not knowing what the lyrics meant.

Before this assignment, I never really listened to what the lyrics meant. Now I embrace the lyrics and also try to figure out what they could mean. For example, in the song Believer, it says “You made me a believer.” This means to me that someone has motivated another to believe and try harder. Now I am learninghow to understand lyrics better.

In music class, I really want to learn more about music. Understanding what different notes mean and how music originated. Anyway, back to the story.

After they played the song Believer they performed a few other songs, like It’s Time, and Thunder. Then it got to the song Natural. This is the song I absolutely poured my heart into. I sang my heart out when they played that song.  Again, I didn't know what the lyrics meant in the song. Now I can figure it out. For example, in the song Natural the lyric says, “Yeah you're a natural.” This could mean that someone is complimenting another person’s skills or talents.

Also, in one of their songs called Radioactive they used two sets of drums on the stage. I was really fascinated by this, even though at the time I didn’t really want to play the drums. I do really respect the people who play musical instruments, but I just want to focus on other things in life, like school and spending time with friends.

When I was six, I really wanted to learn how to play the drums, and I actually got pretty good at it. Then I took a break for a bit, and I lost interest. I picked it back up when I was eight or so, but it never really stuck. I also spent a little bit of time playing the ukulele.

Maybe I will play an instrument one day again, but right now, I just enjoy listening to music with my ears and heart.
